Customs and traditions in Uchisar are mostly influenced by the nearby cities such as Kayseri and Nigde, as well as neighboring towns and villages. Local songs and melodies are very similar although the towns are different.

folklor_3The marriages take place after they accomplish the military service for men, at the age of 18-19 for ladies. Young man’s family prefers the girl to be a pretty, clever and skilled one; the girl’s side on the other hand wants to see a strong, smart boy with good habits.

There is different way to express the will for marriage in the villages. Young man can show this will by nailing his father’s shoes or putting the spoon in a plate full of rice. His family understands the message and they make attempts for visiting girl’s family and make an appointment. During their visit with the whole family they are served tea or coffee by the candidate of bride and they make their wish explicit by saying ‘we have come to ask your permission for the marriage of our children with the permission of God’. Even if the girl’s family thinks positively on the matter they don’t reply quickly but promise for answering as quickly as possible. If they agree they inform man’s family and they make an engagement and they drink ?erbet (sort of syrup) for the honor of young couple. The engagement period can be short or long. Since girl’s family is traditionally supposed to be capricious they postpone the halaywedding ceremony by saying that they are not ready. Weddings generally start on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, end on Fridays. The first day, following Morning Prayer in the mosque they hoist flag. The local orchestra formed by davul and zurna (drum and sort of clarinet) and dancers ( köçek) are invited to perform. People eat and drink the whole day and everybody is invited. The day after is called ‘the hamam day of groom’. Men go to Turkish bath all together. They eat at home and then together with the orchestra and the Turkish flag hold by friends or relatives , with a sort of scarf on the head of the groom , they walk through the village into the Turkish bath where they will spend the whole day. By this time women take bride’s goods to her new home. That night ‘henna ceremony’ is organized among the women. Henna is a green powder originated from India and when it is mixed with water it takes orange color. Women sing, dance together and put henna on their hands starting from the bride. They recite poems and they make the bride cry. The bride sleeps in the same room with her girl friends. Thursday is the most important day of the wedding, both parts are anxious. Men and women from the groom’s side go to bride’s home to get here and bring to new home. The orchestra plays sentimental melodies which affect bride’s family and which make them cry. Bride leaves her home by passing between her brothers and sisters and takes her way to the new home, very slowly, to express her feeling of sadness because of leaving her birth place.

folklor_3By this time, the gloom waits patiently for the arrival of the bride sitting on the flat roof of the house and he pours coins and grains of wheat for the abundance as she steps in the new home.

After the prayer made by Imam, food is served in the home. The last day of the ceremony men get entertained among themselves and the wedding ends.
